Steven Gerrard Set To Become Permanent England Captain

Steven Gerrard is set to take over the captaincy from Rio Ferdinand on a permanent basis after the defender has failed to make a full recovery from injuries.

Ferdinand was set to captain  England during the World Cup however he has to withdraw from the squad with an ankle injury.

And that paved the way for Liverpool skipper Gerrard to lead his country.

Alex Ferguson has also taken the captains arm band from Rio and has given it to his centre back partner Nemanja Vidic.

Ferguson said: “What we wanted was someone who was consistently available for us.

“Everyone recognises Nemanja would always be there.

“He has been fit all season and you don’t leave him out of the team unless you are going to rest him.”
