Germany vs Spain Preview

On Wednesday 7th July the second World Cup semi final takes place between Germany and Spain in Durban. This match is of course a repeat of the Euro 2008 final where Spain beat Germany 1-0. This is set to be a great game perhaps worthy of being the actual final. Germany have been in great form brushing aside England and Argentina scoring 8 goals and only conceding 1.The Spanish team is packed with talent, but perhaps we witnessed a few flaws as the Spanish team struggled against Paraguay. Germany need to take control of the middle of the park as they did against England and Argentina. If the Germans can also contain David Villa then they will surely win.

Fernando Hierro, a former Spanish defender believes the Spanish have a winning mentality to win not only the semi final game but also the final.

“La Roja are in the semi-finals of the World Cup for the first time, while they were also crowned European champions in 2008 for the first time since 1964”

And Hierro said: “What has changed is the mentality. After 44 years, Spain are now the European champions. This is showing now in this tournament with the team reaching the semi-final. The team now has momentum, but what the win in 2008 has done is give the team more confidence and they have matured as well.”

Spain had a shaky start to their World Cup campaign losing to Switzerland in their opening game. They quickly bounced back beating Honduras and Chile, before unconvincing  1-0 victories over Portugal and Paraguay.

There is no doubt that David Villa has been the outstanding Spanish player bagging five goals almost dragging Spain through to the semi finals on his own. The same cannot be said for Fernando Torres who seems to be struggling.

The Germans have proved they have the class to open up quality defences so I’m backing Klose to do it again  breaking Spanish hearts avenging the 2008 Euro defeat.
