The “will he won’t he” saga surrounding Jack Wilshere’s participation in the forthcoming European Under-21 Championships seems now to be over with the Arsenal manager stating that 19-year old Jack Wilshere has made the 23 man squad. The squad was not supposed to be announced until 1st June although it seems now that that the full squad will be named later today.

Many football pundits have expressed opinions that Wilshere’s appearance in the European Under-21 Championships, which will be held in Denmark this summer, would leave the young Gunners star jaded for next season’s Premier League and the following European Championships. Wilshere though has always  been keen to play in the tournament backed by England’s Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce. Wilshere has already played a staggering 48 game this season!

Arsenal boss,  Arsene Wenger, has though fired a few warning shots at the FA stating that the FA must handle the young star in a responsible way plus admitted that Wilshere playing in the tournament was in effect a massive risk.

Wenger is not the only Premier League manager who has concerns about first team players playing in the tournament as Liverpool boss, Kenny Dalglish is also on record as stating that he is not in favour of first team players being selected for the summer finals.

The good news for English football fans is that England will have a quality line up for the championship which starts with a tough match against tournament favourites Spain on 12th June. Can we dream of England becoming Under-21 European Champions?
