Last season everyone seemed to think that the Detroit Lions were going to be the surprise team in the NFC Conference and finally get back into the playoffs. Unfortunately, that didn’t turn out to be the case as they couldn’t get on track in the NFC North division after quarterback Matthew Stafford went down with yet another injury that would keep him out a considerable amount of time.

Despite last year being somewhat of a disappointment for arguably one of the most talented young teams in the NFL, this year could be the season they breakout and get back into playoff contention. Obviously, the offense will make headlines with Matthew Stafford, Jahvid Best and Calvin Johnson leading the way, but the defense could be the key to their success.

Ndamukong Suh was without a doubt the best player on defense for the Lions last season and this year they will have another defensive player to make headlines in rookie Nick Fairley. Even though Fairley will help this team get that much better on defense, Detroit could improve even more on defense with the addition of free agent Nnamdi Asomugha.

At this point in time, the Oakland Raiders seem content with letting arguably one of the best corners in the league leave town via free agency. With that being said, there will be a lot of teams around the league that will be throwing a lot of money in the veteran cornerback’s direction, but the Detroit Lions might have the leg up as they could be the next best team in the NFC Conference.

Asomugha will not come keep, but the Detroit Lions might have the money to pay him and as a result could turn into a powerhouse on the defensive side of the football next season.
