New York Giants @ Carolina Panthers Sat. Aug. 13, 2011 8 p.m. EST
Coming into this NFL preseason, the Carolina Panthers are looking to turn around their struggling NFL franchise after such a disappointing season last year. Even though they drafted a quarterback in Notre Dame product Jimmy Clausen before last season, the Panthers had the number one pick in the 2011 NFL draft and had to take BCS champion and Heisman trophy winner Cam Newton.
Whether or not Cam Newton turns out to be a success in the NFL remains to be seen, but the Panthers needed to take the most talented and promising player in the draft which was the former Auburn gunslinger. With the addition of Newton, Clausen will take the backup role in Carolina and this team might benefit for this move right out of the gate.
In his NFL debut, Cam Newton will lead the Carolina Panthers against the New York Giants on Saturday night at Bank of America Stadium. This will be a pretty good test for Cam Newton as he will face a good defense on Saturday night at home.
The New York Giants are usually a perennial playoff contender in the NFC Conference from year to year, but this season might be a bit different as quarterback Eli Manning has lost his favorite wide receiver in Steve Smith (Philadelphia Eagles), missed out on Plaxico Burress and have their best defensive player in Osi Umenyoira looking to go elsewhere.
Needless to say, the Giants are in trouble and could be in for a disastrous season filled with disappointment. Even though the Giants could be in trouble, they should come out on top in their first preseason game against an inexperience and young Panthers squad.
