New York Jets @ Houston Texans Mon. Aug. 15, 2011 8 p.m. EST
Perhaps the most entertaining game of the first week of the NFL preseason will be the New York Jets taking on the Houston Texans. The Jets are perennial Super Bowl title contenders right now with a bright future ahead in the Rex Ryan era, but the Texans are a team on the rise in the NFL and should no longer be taken for granted as they might be playoff bound this season.
Last season was a breath of fresh air for the Houston Texans as they saw running back Arian Foster come into his own. The Texans already had a potent offense led by quarterback Matt Schaub and perennial Pro Bowler Andre Johnson, but their running game was nonexistent which ultimately made the offense predictable for opposing defenses.
Houston’s defense still needs some work in order for the Texans to truly compete with the best of the best in the AFC Conference, but the Texans are good enough to make a legitimate run at the playoffs this season and possibly dethrone Peyton Manning and Indianapolis Colts for the AFC South division title.
As for the Jets, the boys from the Big Apple will be looking to get their new players involved and ready for the upcoming NFL regular season. The key additions for this team were on the offensive side of the football with Rex Ryan and company bringing in veteran wide receivers Plaxico Burress and Derrick Mason.
It will be interesting to see if Mason and Burress are what the Jets need to make the next step on offense and turn quarterback Mark Sanchez one of the best at his position in the NFL.
