San Francisco 49ers @ San Diego Chargers Thurs. Sept. 1, 2011 10 p.m. EST
The Jim Harbaugh era in the Bay Area is about to begin with the San Francisco 49ers having just one more preseason game before the NFL regular season gets underway. Even though the struggling NFL franchise seems to have taken a step in the right direction with Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore getting re-signed, the addition of wide receiver Braylon Edwards and a new head coach calling the shots, this team still has a lot of work to do in order to become a playoff contender in the NFC Conference.
The one problem that the San Francisco 49ers face heading into their preseason finale against the San Diego Chargers is at the quarterback position with veteran quarterback Alex Smith battling rookie Colin Kaepernick to be the starter for the Week 1 showdown against the division rival Seattle Seahawks.
With the quarterback battle continuing into the final week of the preseason for the 49ers, this game against the Chargers will be extremely important for head coach Jim Harbaugh. The consensus is that Alex Smith will ultimately be the starter under center in San Francisco, but even if he does the veteran will be on a short leash as this quarterback battle was not thought to be a close on and it has turned out to be the complete opposite.
On Thursday night, Colin Kaepernick will get one last shot to prove that he should be the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, but the San Diego Chargers will not make it easy.
