Last-place Blackburn Rovers are at home to 12th-place Arsenal on Sept. 17th in an English Premier League matchup at Ewood Park. Both teams have been struggling so far this season and points are desperately needed by both of them. Blackburn sits in 20th and last place in the table with just one point from a draw and three losses while Arsenal has a win, a draw and two losses for four points.
Arsenal was hammered 8-2 by Manchester United in their last away game and will certainly be hoping to rebound against the Rovers. Blackburn earned their first point of the season last weekend with a 1-1 draw at Fulham.
The beating by United prompted Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to finally sign a few new players in the transfer window, especially after he lost the likes of Samir Nasri to Man. City, Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona, and Nicklas Bendtner on loan to Sunderland. Wenger ended up bringing in Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta from Everton, midfielder Yossi Benayoun from Chelsea on loan, German defender Per Mertesacker, Brazilian defender Andre Santos and striker Park Chu-young from Monaco.
Arsenal has the depth needed to compete in the English Premier League, but Wenger has to learn how to use it to be successful. The played to a 1-1 draw with 1-1 Borussia Dortmund in a Champions League game on Tuesday and managed to beat Swansea 1-0 last weekend, so come into the game on a bit of a roll.
Blackburn has one of the best goalkeepers in the league in Englishman Paul Robinson, but they have a hard time scoring goals. Robinson will have to be at his best if Blackburn is to win or draw. However, the club has other problems at the moment as the fans are demanding that Scottish manager Steve Kean be replaced after winning just one of 24 games in charge of the club. It’s hard to believe that Kean wasn’t replaced during the summer as his brutal record speaks for itself.
Both of these clubs have scored just three goals each this season and for Arsenal that’s simply not good enough considering the talent they have in the team, such as Theo Walcott, Andrey Arshavin, Robin van Persie, Benayoun, Arteta, and Tomas Rosicky.
However, Arsenal could be without Rosicky as well as Aaron Ramsey, and Sebastian Squillaci as they’re all on the borderline for fitness. They will be without Jack Wilshere and Thomas Vermaelen for sure.
Blackburn is hoping that forward Junior Hoilett will be able to play after being carried off the field on a stretcher last weekend at Fulham.
This could be a pretty good game as both teams need the points. Don’t look for Blackburn to win it, but they could pull out a home draw.
Sportsbook William Hill has the odds of a Blackburn win at 16/5, an Arsenal win at 5/6 and a draw at 13/5.
