All of the top sides in the Premier League are struggling for consistency at the moment which is making for some surprising results. Manchester City managed to retain top spot by virtue of a 1-0 victory at Wigan (tipped in this column at 8-1).

Saturday 21st January

Norwich City v Chelsea Live on Skysports HD2

The televised action kicks off with an intriguing clash between Premier League new boys Norwich and the enigmatic Chelsea. The Canaries continue to surprise and grabbed a 2-1 away win at West Brom last week to hoist themselves into the top half of the table. Chelsea struggled to overcome a rejuvenated Sunderland side by the same scoreline but were hanging on grimly at the final whistle. It will be interesting to see whether they decide to blood new signing Gary Cahill in an effort to tighten up their much-maligned defence.

It would be no surprise if goals were the order of the day here and it may be worth taking a punt on the odds of 28-1 about a 3-2 win for the Blues. Bet365 offer 6-4 about there being more than 3 goals scored in the match and 15-2 about Juan Mata opening the scoring. Ramires has also been in good form and 4-1 looks generous on him finding the back of the net at anytime during the game.

Sunderland v Swansea City Live on Setanta Ireland

Martin O’Neill has turned Sunderland’s fortunes around in the short time since his arrival and they were desperately unlucky not to come away with at least a point from Stamford Bridge on Saturday. They meet another side on an upward curve in Swansea City who upset Arsenal with a pulsating 3-2 victory. This has the makings of a draw and the 5-2 offered by Skybet and Stan James could be worth taking. 1-1 is popular at odds of around 6-1 so it could be worth having a saver on a 2-2 scoreline at odds of 20-1. Sessegnon was always a threat at Chelsea last week and could open the scoring for the Black Cats at odds of 6-1 with Bet365.

Bolton Wanderers v Liverpool Live on ESPN HD

Bolton were no match for Manchester United last weekend and have now lost the services of Gary Cahill. Liverpool failed to break down a stubborn Stoke side last week and continue to frustrate their home supporters. Even so, they should have too much fire power for Bolton and the 14-1 with Paddy Power for a 3-0 win for the Reds looks tempting. Gerrard is working his way back into form and is 5-1 to open the scoring.

Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur Live on Skysports HD1

Tottenham missed the chance to join United on 48 points when they were held by Wolves last week and must now take something from the Premiership leaders to put themselves firmly in contention. City retain a 3 point lead but defeats at Chelsea and Sunderland plus a benign Carling Cup home defeat by Liverpool suggest they are vulnerable. Spurs look overpriced at 100-30 to pull off a victory here and Gareth Bale is a good bet at 11-1 to break the deadlock. 14-1 is available about a 2-1 win for the away side.

Arsenal v Manchester United Live on Skysports HD1

Arsenal continue to disappoint when it comes to the crunch and this is their almost certainly their last chance to remain in any sort of touch with their Manchester rivals. A 3-2 defeat at Swansea has left them 15 points adrift of City with a Champions League spot their only realistic hope. If they need an incentive to win this game they need only reflect on their embarrassing 8-2 thrashing at Old Trafford at the start of the season. They are a different proposition now and 15-8 probably reflects their chances of beating a less than convincing United. Robin van Persie continues to be Arsenal’s talisman and he is priced at 5-1 to open the scoring. 9-1 looks a fair bet on a 1-0 Arsenal victory and it may also pay to look at the sending off market in what promises to be a bruising encounter. You can currently get around 6-4 about a red card being brandished during the game.
