Fourth-place Borussia Monchengladbach will attempt to close the gap on German Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich when they host them on Friday Jan. 20 at Borussia-Park. Borussia goes into the game with 33 points from 17 games on a record of 10 wins, three draws and four losses while Bayern Munich tops the table with 37 points from 12 wins, a draw and four losses. In between them are Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 who both have 34 points.
The winter break is over in Germany and action resumes with this classic matchup. However, Borussia will have a slightly different look to them side as midfield star Marco Reus was sold to Borussia Dortmund for a reported cost of 14.5 million pounds. Reus won’t be making the move until the season’s over though, and he’s expected to sign a five-year deal with his new club. It’s believed that Reus will be a replacement for star Mario Gotze as he’s supposedly headed to Bayern Munich during the summer. Roman Neustadter will also be leaving the team in the summer. In addition, striker Joshua King was sent back to England’s Manchester United after his loan spell ended. Midfielders Tolga Cigerci and Alexander Ring have been added as reinforcements. Defender Dante will miss the game due to suspension and this could pave the way for Roel Brouwers to play.
Borussia is playing well at home so far this season and are undefeated in nine matches there with six wins and three draws. They’re also the third-best defensive side at home as well as being the second-best defensive team in the league overall with just 11 goals against. Manager Lucien Favre has his team playing as a cohesive unit and will be hoping that players such as Havard Nordtveit, Mike Hanke, and Juan Arango will continue their fine play against Bayern. Arango has proven he’s a quality passer while Nordtveit offers a key link between defence and midfield and the squad’s power and size up front comes courtesy of Hanke.
It’s no surprise that Bayern Munich sits on top of the table since they’re the league’s top defensive team with 10 goals against and top offensive club with 43 goals for. They were on a three-game winning streak when the winter break came and should now get some of their injured players back. Manager Jupp Heynckes will be glad to see the likes of internationals Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mario Gomez, Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, and Mario Gomez all healthy and ready for duty. However, Ribery will miss this match with a suspension.
Betting Predictions and Odds
Bayern might go into this game with revenge on their mind since Borussia beat them 1-0 on their home pitch on the opening day of the season. Gomez will be the key for Bayern as he leads the league with 16 goals. Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos will give him some support. Bayern go into the game with five wins from their last five games while Borussia has three wins, a draw and a loss in their past five. However, Bayern hasn’t won at Borussia park for six years now.
Borussia may not win the game, but they shouldn’t lose it either. Look for this one to end up in a draw.
