If Tottenham Hotspur has any hope of winning the English Premier League this season they can help their cause greatly by beating league leaders Manchester City when they face off against each other at Etihad Stadium in Manchester on Jan 22. City leads the league with 51 points from 16 wins, three draws and two losses while Spurs are in third place with 14 wins, four draws and three losses for 26 points. Manchester United sits between them with 48 points. Spurs have a four-point lead over Chelsea heading into the weekend’s games and a 10-point lead over Arsenal and Newcastle, which makes a top-four finish and a spot in next season’s Champions League a good possibility.

Spurs are coming off a disappointing 1-1 home draw with Wolves last week and can’t afford to drop any more points this weekend, especially against the team they’re trying to catch. They’ve only lost once in their last 19 games though, which was a defeat by Stoke. They’ll have to play this match without their top scorer Emmanuel Adebayor though since he’s on loan at Tottenham from Man City and can’t play against his club due to the loan agreement. Adebayor has nine league goals so far this season. This means Jermain Defoe will hopefully get to play up front.

City will have to play without the services of Vincent Kompany as he’s serving a suspension for a red card against Liverpool. They’ll also be without Yaya Toure and Kolo Toure who are playing in the African Nations Cup. City has lost a couple of big home games lately, which were in the FA Cup and League Cup as both Manchester United and Liverpool beat them recently in a four-day span. They beat Wigan away 1-0 in a league game on Monday, but didn’t really look that good in doing it. Overall, they’ve lost four out of their past nine games. City manager Roberto Mancini should have striker Mario Balotelli back in the squad as well as defender Micah Richards.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said that City is beatable and his team will go there to try and earn all three points. He doesn’t want to go there and just sit back and defend. However, it’s hard to say how confident Spurs will be against City since City hammered them 5-1 earlier in the season at White Hart Lane. Still, Redknapp feels players like Defoe, Aaron Lennon, Gareth Bale, and Rafael van der Vaart will be able to create enough offense to take all three points. They also have 40-year-old Brad Friedel playing well in goal. City also has a strong attack with Sergio Aguero, Balotelli, and Edin Dzeko to play up front at as well as players like James Milner and David Silva. He may also have the best goalie in the Premier League too with Joe Hart.

This should be a good game, but it looks like City will win wit to pull a bit further ahead of Spurs in the title race.

Sportsbook William Hill is showing the latest odds of a City win at 10/11 with a Spurs victory at 10/3 and a draw at 11/5.
