Siena vs Napoli
Two of Italy’s struggling teams will hope to break out in a big way when Siena hosts Napoli in a Coppa Italia semifinal game at Stadio Comunale Artemio Franchi in Siena. Siena has won just once in their last five matches along with two losses and two draws. Napoli has also just won once along with three losses and a draw. This is the first leg of a two-legged semi final with the next game being played in Napoli on March 21. The winner will face either AC Milan or Juventus in the final.
Napoli has beaten Siena twice, lost once and drawn two against them in their past five meetings. Siena has won just once in their last six home games while Napoli has won just once in their past six overall. Napoli sits in seventh place in the league table in the Italian Serie A with 31 points from seven wins, 10 draws and five losses. Siena sits 17th in the table with 20 points from four wins, eight draws and nine losses. They’re just three ahead of the relegation zone above Lecce.
Siena is actually one of the best defensive teams in the league as they’ve allowed just 22 goals against in their 21 games, which is fifth best in the league. The problem is they’ve scored only 21 goals, which is the sixth lowest total in Serie A. Siena plays close games, but unfortunately they have a hard time winning them. With a few more goals they could easily be safely positioned in mid table. Napoli, on the other hand, has allowed 36 goals against, but has scored 31.
Siena manager Giuseppe Sannino will have to do without the services of regular goalkeeper Zeljko Brkic since the Serbian international is out of action for at least another week after having surgery on his groin. It also looks like Francesco Bolzoni won’t be playing either as he also has a nagging groin injury.
Napoli manager Walter Mazzarri has a relatively healthy squad to choose from, but there could be a few changes to the team that played to a draw against AC Milan in last Sunday’s league game. Goran Pandev could take over up front from Ezequiel Lavezzi while Dokhan Inler and Andrea Dossena could replace Blerim Dzemaili and Juan Zuniga in the midfield.
Siena v Napoli Predictions
This looks like it’s going to be another close game and there’s a good chance that it could end in a draw. This semi-final will undoubtedly be settled in the second leg in Napoli next month.
According to the latest odds from sports book William Hill, the odds of a Siena victory are 11/5 with a Napoli win at 13/10 and a draw at 11/5.
