English Premier League club Chelsea heads to Italy for a Champions League group-of-16 match against Napoli at Stadio San Paolo on Feb. 21. It might not be very good timing since the London team has been struggling quite a bit lately. They’ve done will in the competition in the past though with a final appearance back in 2008 as well as reaching the semi-finals on four occasions. If they don’t make it that far this year though it’ll be the third straight year of not reaching the semi-finals.

In league play, they’ve slipped to fourth place in the EPL table and could only manage a 1-1 draw against Birmingham in their FA Cup match against on Saturday In addition, manager Andre Villas-Boas has stated that he’s lost the support of some of his squad.

Napoli, on the other hand, pulled out a 3-0 win in Fiorentina in a Serie A contest on Friday with Edinson Cavani scoring twice to lift his total to 15 league goals so far this season. He also has four in the Champions League. Cavani said the Chelsea match is going to be a tough one, but if they play the same way they did on Friday they should be able to get a good result from it. However, the Italian team will likely have to play without defender Hugo Campagnaro as he’s sidelined at the moment with an injured calf.

Villas-Boas will be hoping that defenders Ashley Cole and John Terry will be back in the squad after sitting out with injuries. Midfielder Frank Lampard and striker Didier Drogba should both be back in the squad to add some confidence and experience to the team along with midfielders Michael Essien and Ramires. Drogba leads Chelsea with three Champions League goals so far.

Villas-Boas said his team’s good enough to beat Napoli even though they couldn’t beat Birmingham on the weekend. However, they’ll have to turn their game around 180 degrees to do it. Napoli has already put out one English team this season by helping put out EPL league leaders Manchester City in the group stage. Chelsea has shown they can raise their game when needed though as evidenced by their 3-0 win over Valencia back in December to reach the knockout stage.

Stats and Predictions for Napoli v Chelsea FC

Chelsea sits in fifth place in the EPL with 43 points from 12 wins, seven draws and six losses. Napoli is in sixth place in Serie A with 37 points from nine wins, 10 draws and five losses. Their 24 goals against is the fourth-best record in the league. Napoli has won two, drawn two and lost one in their last five games while Chelsea has won just once, drawn three and lost one in their past five. Chelsea has won just once in Italy, which was a 4-0 win over Lazio back in 2003/04.

This game pits the offense of Chelsea against Napoli’s defence and that could result in a draw.
