Liverpool hosts Arsenal at Anfield on March 3 in one of the weekend’s biggest English Premier League encounters. Liverpool is coming off a close penalty-kick shootout at Wembley last weekend where they won the Carling Cup 3-2 over Cardiff. Arsenal overcame a 2-0 deficit to Spurs at home on the same day and ended up storming back for a 5-2 win.

Arsenal sits in fourth place in the league table with 46 points from 14 wins, four draws and eight losses. They’re level on points with Chelsea and seven behind Spurs. Since it’s highly unlikely Arsene Wenger’s squad is going to win anything again this season the club is shooting for fourth place so they can qualify for the Champions League next season. However, they’re in a dogfight with Chelsea, Newcastle, and Liverpool for fourth place.

Liverpool is in seventh place in the league with 39 points from 10 wins, nine draws and six losses. They’re seven points behind Arsenal, but have a game in hand. A win in this game would be huge for them as it would pull them within four points of the Gunners. Of course, Arsenal can go 10 ahead if they win it. Arsenal could also gain three valuable points on Spurs, as they face Manchester United on Sunday.

However, both Arsenal and Liverpool have a habit of coming up short in big games, especially Arsenal. Liverpool draws too many matches and that’s why they find themselves in seventh spot. One of these teams needs to step up to the plate here and grab three points to shake off their critics.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was taken off while playing for England against Holland on Wednesday and it’s unclear if he’ll be dressed. Lucas is out with an injury and defender Daniel Agger is sidelined with a broken rib. Defender Glen Johnson missed the England match and could also miss this one.

Arsenal will be without Jack Wilshere and Per Mertesacker as they both appear to be out for the season. Robin van Persie is likely to play even though his groin is a bit sore. Defender Thomas Vermaelen and midfielder Tomas Rosicky will be game time decisions. However, defender Andre Santos and Sebastien Squillaci will also miss the game and midfielder Andrei Arshavin has been loaned to Zenit St Petersburg of Russia.

Liverpool beat Arsenal 2-0 early in the season at Emirates Stadium and goes into this game with two wins, two draws and a loss in their past five games.

Liverpool v Arsenal Predictions

Arsenal has three wins and two losses in their last five. Liverpool has won just four games at home this season while Arsenal has won five on the road.
Six out of the last nine meetings between these teams have ended in draws and there’s a good chance this one will too.

Sportsbook William Hill has the current odds of a Liverpool win listed at 11/10 and an Arsenal victory at 14/5 with a draw at 21/10.
