Manchester United will attempt to regain first place in the English Premier League on March 26 when they host Fulham at Old Trafford. United goes into the game level on points with neighbouring Manchester City at with 70 each. City has played one game more though, so a win here would put United three points clear at the top of the table.
United have their points from 22 wins, four draws and three defeats while Fulham sits in 13th place in the EPL with 36 points from nine wins, nine draws and 11 losses. United is the top scoring team in the league with 73 goals, one more than City with striker Wayne Rooney leading the way with 20 league goals so far this season, including 16 in his last 16 games and five against Fulham at home in their past four meetings. American Clint Dempsey tops the scoring chart for Fulham with an even dozen league goals.
City blew two points in their game on the weekend when they were held to a 1-1 draw at Stoke. United realizes this is a huge chance to take top place and will be out to make sure they don’t slip up like City. United has been playing quite well in the league compared to their terrible time of it in Europe this season. They were knocked out of both the champions and Europa Leagues quite early. They also didn’t last too long in the FA Cup and Carling Cup competitions either.
They’ve won eight of their past league games though and have been pretty consistent all season long. Fulham won three games in a row in late February to early March, with wins over Stoke City, Queens Park Rangers, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. However, since then they’ve been beaten by Aston Villa and lost Swansea City 3-0 at home in their last game.
Fulham has most of their players available for this match, but Zdenek Grygera, Orlando Sa, and Steve Sidwell are expected to miss the contest due to various injuries. United will likely have to play without the services of defender Phil Jones while goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard and striker Michael Owen are expected back in April. Portuguese forward Nani has an ankle problem and isn’t expected to play while midfielder Darren Fletcher and defender Nemanja Vidic are likely out for the season. Anderson’s status is also unknown at this juncture. However, defender Chris Smalling is expected back in the squad.
United has won their last five league games in a row while Fulham has three wins and two losses. United has four wins and a loss in their past five home matches while Fulham has just one win in their past five away games with three losses and a draw. Fulham hasn’t scored a goal at Old Trafford since 2006, when Rio Ferdinand put it in his own net for them. Fulham manager Martin Jol has never won a game against Manchester United. He’s managed two draws and seven losses.
