Liverpool’s European exploits kick off against Rabotnicki of Macedonia or Armenian side Mika on 29th July although Fernando Torres, Joes Reina, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel do not return to the club until after that date. Medical staff has also told Hodgson that perhaps it would be a good idea if other Anfield stars such as Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher plus other were also rested.

Hodgson seemed to have taken the advice on board by stating: “If we feel we are endangering our chances of doing well in the Premier League by risking players in the early stage of the Europa League, it will be a decision the club will have to take. You have to follow the guidance.”

Milan Jovanovic, who became Hodgson’s first signing from Standard Liege earlier in July, will be available for selection.

Hogdson also hinted at more signings by saying:

“ Any other fresh arrivals “would become important for the Europa League”.
