David James is in talks with Celtic now that talks with Portsmouth in regards to a player-coaching role have broken down. Portsmouth did offer 39 year old James a contract but demanded a quick response of which James did not offer. Celtic need a replacement for their former goalkeeper, Boruc who moved to Fiorentina for a fee believed to be around £2m last week.

Celtic opening talks with James will be a blow to Lukasz Zaluska who has been waiting in the wings as number two to Boruc for some time. Zaluska will have a great chance to stake his claim to the number one shirt tomorrow in Celtic’s friendly against Sporting Lisbon.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has been linked with several top goalkeeper so it would not be a surprise to see James end his career at Celtic, perhaps though to the dismay of Zaluska.
