Lee Westwood May Miss Open

Britain’s world number three, Lee Westwood, is struggling to regain full fitness so may be forced to miss the Open at St Andrews.

“Lee is hopeful of playing, but they just have to monitor the injury and see how it progresses over the next week,” said spokesman Martin Hardy.

Westwood had hoped to practice at St Andrews on Thursday but has been told to rest for a week. It is believe his situation will be reviewed next Monday. Westwood picked up the injury while playing in the French open at the weekend.

He recalled: “I had a three-iron at the third from a ball-below-feet lie and I think I just tweaked it. After that I could hardly put any weight on it.”

Tests in a Paris hospital at the weekend proved he did not have a blood clot, and he flew home on Sunday night.

Westwood has been in great form during the last few months finishing in second place at the US Masters in April and claiming victory at the St Jude Classic in June. Westwood would be a major force in the Open with many tipping him to win the event.
