The 139thth running of the Kentucky Derby is all set for this Saturday May 4 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The post positions for the world’s most famous 10 furlong horserace have been released. In the past 113 races, 90 of the winners started from one of the inside 10 positions.

There are a couple of interesting stories in the Derby. One of them concerns jockey Kevin Krigger who will be on board Goldencents, the Santa Anita Derby victor. Krigger is just the second African-American jockey competing in the Derby since back in 1921. If he happens to win it, he’d be the first to do so since the 1902 race.

In addition, Rosie Napravnik will be riding Mylute. Napravnik managed to place ninth during the Kentucky Derby in 2011. This was the highest finish by a female jockey in the history of the event and she now has the chance to set a new mark. Mylute may be the horse to help her rewrite the history book since he came in a close second at the Louisiana Derby behind Revolutionary.

Two jockeys, Gary Stevens and Calvin Borel, will be attempting to win their fourth overall Kentucky Derby events. Borel will be riding Revolutionary while Stevens is going to be on board Oxbow. Borel won the race three times from 2007 to 2010. As far as trainers go, Todd Pletcher has five horses in the race. These are Revolutionary, Overanalyze, Charming Kitten, and Palace Malice, and the undefeated Verrazano. However, it may be a case of quality over quantity when it comes to winning the race. Pletcher has managed to win the Derby just one time in the past when Super Saver rode to the winner’s circle in 2010. The odds look pretty good this year for him though and there’s a good chance he could add to his lone victory.

Whoever wins the Kentucky Derby will garner attention for the Triple Crown even though it hasn’t been achieved since back in 1978. I’ll Have Another came close last year after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, but unfortunately missed the Belmont Stakes because of tendonitis. The odds-on favourite hasn’t won the race in the last four years, so it’ll be interesting to see if can Orb snap this streak.

It looks like Orb could pull off a win here as he’s one of the hottest horses out there at the moment. However, Goldencents, Mylute, Verrazano, Normandy Invasion, and Revolutionary should make it quite an interesting two minutes.

STARSPANGLEDBANNER simply can’t be opposed as he beat ten of the runners of this race last time out in a great victory in the Golden Jubilee at Ascot. Runners up in the Ascot race were Society Rock and third placed Kinsale King who should both run well. Perhaps the danger will come from Fleeting Spirit who was 4^th behind STARSPANGLEDBANNER although had a poor draw having to run on the unfavoured side of the Ascot track.

STARSPANGLEDBANNER simply oozed class at Ascot so will be a short price in this race. With a starting price of around 7/4 we still this as a great value bet.
